About Qawra Wrestling Club

Founded by a small group of wrestling enthusiasts, parents and PE teachers in 2013, Qawra Wrestling Club has grown into one of the most active community wrestling organisations in Malta — but our purpose has never changed.

Our history

The club was started in a borrowed school hall with two donated mats, one whistle, and seventeen children. For the first three years, every session was run entirely by volunteers, and most of the equipment was bought through coffee mornings and sponsored walks. In 2016 we registered formally as a voluntary organisation. In 2018 we moved into our current home in Iż-Żurrieq, thanks to support from the local council and a long-term partnership with the parish community. Since then we have hosted national tournaments, sent juniors to international invitational events, run twelve summer camps, and introduced more than 1,800 children to wrestling.

We exist because someone, many years ago, opened a door for the people who founded this club. We try to do the same — every week, for every person who steps onto our mat. Many of our current coaches and committee members started here as children. Some were our first ever members. That continuity is, quietly, the thing we are proudest of.

Our mission

To promote wrestling and active, healthy lifestyles in Malta — particularly among children, young people, women and underserved members of our community — by providing safe, structured, affordable training; by educating coaches, referees and volunteers; and by championing the values of respect, fair play, inclusion and lifelong learning.

Our vision

Our vision

To be Malta's leading community wrestling organisation: a place where every child can find belonging, every adult can find purpose on the mat, and every volunteer can find meaningful service. We aim to develop a generation of athletes who are as proud of how they conduct themselves as of how they compete — and to make Iż-Żurrieq known across Europe as a small Maltese town that does wrestling, and community, exceptionally well.
